Wings

The Seventh Season

CBS DVD

Wings was one of those TV shows that I enjoyed watching in the 90’s and I still enjoy watching re-runs every time I come across an episode in syndication.  Needless to say I was ecstatic when I received Wings: The Seventh Season DVD for review.  This four-disc set containing all 26 episodes which aired during the 1995 – 1996 TV season.

Season Seven picks up right at the conclusion of Season Six when Joe and Helen finally tie the knot and take their honeymoon to Jamaica.  The first episode has the newlyweds trying to explore the island to only find themselves wanting to spend time with each other in their honeymoon suite.  While back on Nantucket Casey and Brian find themselves strangely attracted to one another and the couple accidentally set Helen and Joe’s house on fire during one of their evening romps.  Other episodes include Joe and Brian unknowingly setting Antonio up on a date with a prostitute and they will do whatever it takes to keep this information away from the love struck cabbie.  Nothing ground breaking happens during this season as most of the episodes revolve around Joe and Helen’s new marriage and Casey, Brian, and Antonio’s relational short comings.  One character that really made the show that was noticeably missing was the peculiar mechanic Lowell Mather and his offbeat sense of humor.

Clearly Season Seven was the beginning of the end of this beloved TV show and unfortunately, for me, it is probably one of the least appealing of seasons.  The themes for the episodes seemed generic and you could tell that the actors were getting burned out as they just didn’t seem to have the spunk they had in earlier seasons.  Don’t get me wrong either, there are some fantastic episodes in this season and some great lines, it’s just apparent that the end is near for the kooky airline on Nantucket Island.  Of course I would highly recommend this DVD for Wings collectors.  For those who just like to casually watch the show I would suggest catching it in syndication or getting the first or second season instead.
