Bear is the sort of guy who does not want to be bothered. He lives in a nice home, clean and tidy. He has a clearly marked sign on his door, “NO Visitors Allowed”. Bear knows what he wants and that is to be left alone. The problem in a little gray mouse that comes back no matter what the bear does. Bear does not realize how much he will actually enjoy Mouse’s company, until he takes time to be with Mouse. Then the tables turn and Bear begs Mouse to stay.
The first thing a reader will notice are the beautiful watercolor illustrations. Each page could easily be framed and hung in a child’s room. Children will enjoy the repetitive phrases, “Small and gray and bright-eyed”. The bear uses wonderful words “impossible”, “intolerable”, “insufferable”, “begone” and “vamoose” to talk to Mouse. This book is perfect for very young children who will enjoy Mouse appearing time and time again. Older children will find humor in Bear’s reaction. The theme of needing friends to make life more enjoyable will be enjoyed by all.
