From the creators of The Naked Gun and Scary Movie series comes Superhero Movie, a spinoff hopeful comedy. The movie basically follows the exact plot line of the inaugural Spider-Man flick until about halfway through where it evolves into a random mish mash of one liners and scenes from various other superhero blockbusters. This isn’t the type of movie that normally has a plot line but I can’t help but think one might have helped this along a bit.
The problem here is basically that this movie isn’t funny. The first half of the film is so close to the actual Spider-Man plot that you almost start to believe you are watching a B-movie version of the film. When the other characters start to enter the picture, all semblance of form is basically tossed out the window, eliminating any momentum the movie might have gotten, which would have made the main jokes actually funny. I will say that Tracy Morgan is pretty funny as Charles Xavier’s character in the X-Men franchise but he never really gets the chance to really make it work thanks to either poor script writing or bad editing.
Basically this movie had a lot going for it. Fodder for this movie is abundant these days and something truly funny could have come from it. Instead the creators went for cheap jokes and nothing to follow plot wise. The expanded edition simply makes the movie longer. Overall I’d skip this one but when all is said and done, I’d give a sequel a chance because there is a funny movie to be made, it just hasn’t been done yet.
