Nine Ducks Nine

Sarah Hayes

Candlewick Press

This is the story of nine ducks who seem oblivious to being followed by a fox, but are actually well aware of his actions. As the story goes along one duck at a time slowly disappears seeming to leave one single brown duck to face the fox all alone.  Well, this time those ducks have banded together to set a trap and send him on his way. Of course fox learns his lesson and never follows the ducks again.

As this book starts the end pages drew my five year old right into the story. I notices the ducks and the woods, but that is it. He immediately noticed the fox lurking in the background and he was hooked.  The story is cute and readable from a parent’s perspective.  I thought the rhythm was missing something, but I am not exactly sure what. It was not enough that I could not read it, it just seemed off on each page. The predictable text was enjoyed by my son who quickly picked it up.  I would recommend looking at this book the next time your preschooler or pre-reader wants to look for a book.  The pictures are revealing to look at again after you have read the story and you can discover even more you missed the first time.
