In Living on the Black, John Feinstein takes an in depth look at the 2007 season by following two of the best pitchers in baseball, Tom Glavine of the New York Mets and Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees. Each pitcher went into the 20007 season with well defined personal and team goals. Glavine was going for his 300th win and Mussina was going for his 250th. And of course each pitcher was hoping to lead his team to the World Series. Living on the Black takes the reader through the entire 2007 year, not just the baseball season. It starts with contract negotiations and spring training before the season, goes through the entire playing season and finishes with contract negotiations for the 2008 year.
There is a good reason that John Feinstein is considered by many to be the best sports author in the nation. Living on the Black is the most thorough baseball book that I have ever had the pleasure to read. It is 508 pages of pure baseball bliss and after finishing it I found myself wishing there was more of it. If you have ever wondered what it is like to be a major league pitcher, Living on the Black is probably as close as you will come to the experience.
