The book of John is my favorite of the four gospels. It is stylistically different and offers some features that distinguish it from the other gospels. It is a brilliant articulation of Christ’s transcending offering to us. This commentary moves through John with precision and ease. This was a very reader friendly commentary. The goal of this book is clearly not to bog the reader down with discussions of semantics, the use of the Greek perfect tense, or text critical issues. Rather it points its focus on bringing out what is being said in the text in an easy to read manner that remains accurate without belaboring some of the particulars that are found in many commentaries. I need to point out I am not dogging technical commentaries, because getting into the original text is imperative for good exegesis but for those looking for a more engaging commentary that does not pre-suppose a working knowledge of Greek this commentary is a great tool. It employs the use of illustrations and an accessible writing style that seamlessly winds its way through this terrific gospel. This book would not be my first choice as a research resource but it would be a great choice for an insightful glimpse into the focus of the text without some of the work and prior-knowledge required of other commentaries. It is very readable and offers a great dialogue in which the message of John is conveyed in fresh and accurate pros.
I found this to be a great commentary that was easy to get into and had an engaging perspective. It is valuable for the pastor as well as the layman. Kent Hughes offers personal experiences that tie in well to the message of the gospel that bring out the meaning of the message of Christ in a very tangible manner. This is a terrific resource.
