The Blood-Hungry Spleen and Other Poems About Our Parts

This is a book of poems on every part of the body. They are cleverly written. Titles of poems include: Your Nose Makes Sense, Ode to My Toes, Spit and many more.

This book is enjoyable. I can easily see a teacher using it in their class during a biology study of any part of the human body.  One of my favorite poems is Kidney Trouble, told from the point of view of your two kidneys. Children would enjoy the poem simply because the word “pee” is mentioned several times.  The poems actually do a good job of explaining the work the body parts do. The illustrations are really fun. I think children would really enjoy learning about their body in this unique way. The one warning I give is about some of the illustrations in the poems Your Hormones are Exciting, Boy Parts and Girl Parts. There is nothing scandalous about the pictures, but younger children, my five year old included, are drawn in by the pictures (no pun intended) and do not know what the poems are about. Also, in the Boy and Girl Parts poems the correct name for the reproductive organs are used. You have to choose how you feel for your child on these ones.  Stick to the front for younger children and you won’t go wrong. I would recommend selections for children as young as preschool, but the entire book wait until late elementary school.
